Biocircular resin offers technical performance equivalent to that of a traditional polymer

ICONIC, Brazil's leading lubricant manufacturer, takes another pioneering step in its journey toward sustainable innovation by adopting a renewable and certified resin for packaging production. Developed in partnership with Braskem, a global petrochemical company that develops chemical and plastic solutions to improve people's lives, and approved suppliers, the project marks an unprecedented advance in the industry, consolidating the company's commitment to decarbonization, circularity, and industrial excellence.
The new packaging, which will initially be used in 10-liter buckets for industrial greases, uses a biocircular resin derived from vegetable waste, with launch scheduled for the end of November 2025. The material has technical performance equivalent to that of a traditional polymer, with high chemical and mechanical resistance, in addition to contributing significantly to reducing the carbon footprint.
Internationally certified by the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification), the resin, which is part of the Wenew portfolio, Braskem's ecosystem dedicated to promoting plastic circularity, with resins and chemicals obtained through recycling, ensures complete traceability and an estimated reduction of 3.3 kg of CO₂ per kg of material compared to virgin resin. The initiative reinforces ICONIC's leading role in the transition to a low-carbon economy, without any impact on the formulation or quality of lubricants.
Since 2023, the company has expanded the use of PCR (post-consumer recycled plastic) in its packaging, reaching up to 98% PCR in 20-liter bottles and up to 61% in 1-liter packages in the Texaco and Ipiranga lines, in a trilayer structure. The incorporation of the new renewable resin further raises the sustainability standard of ICONIC packaging, aligning with global decarbonization goals and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
"More than a product innovation, this initiative reinforces ICONIC's commitment to integrating technology, sustainability, and efficiency throughout the value chain. Our goal is to lead the movement for solutions with less environmental impact, promoting a virtuous cycle of sustainability in the lubricants industry," comments Daiane Spadari, Research & Development manager at ICONIC.
"Providing a renewable and certified resin is a concrete example of our efforts to support our partners in their sustainability commitments, in order to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon circular economy. This biocircular solution not only maintains the technical performance required by the industry, but also contributes to reducing emissions and increasing the circularity of packaging," says Pier Pesce, Circular Economy and Cazoolo Business Development Leader at Braskem.
With this unprecedented initiative in the sector, ICONIC consolidates its leadership in the biocircular route, replacing fossil inputs with renewable raw materials and reaffirming its role as a transformative agent in the industry towards a more sustainable future.
